Congratulations to all our GCSE students – what a wonderful set of results. It is great to see my students achieving such wonderful results year after year. Every door is open for you now.

 

Some of you come to me with stories of overwhelm, stress and anxiety and teachers (not all) who you feel put you down and tell you you are ungradable. To see you go through and pass your Maths brings me such joy and tears of happiness. You all deserve the best and now you have every door open to you. I know you will all do great things in the future.

Transitioning from the summer holidays back to school can be tricky, especially as most children have enjoyed a much more relaxed schedule for 6 weeks. With August coming to an end, it’s the perfect time to gradually ease your children or child back into a routine to avoid an abrupt transition when they have to go back to school. Here’s 5 tips to help you get prepared.

 

1. Re-establish school routines

With just a few days to go until they go back to school, it’s a great idea to have your child practice getting into the rhythm of their general school routine. Set up a regular bedtime and start reintroducing their usual morning routine. Whether this is an early wake up, breakfast and getting themselves ready, it will help eradicate stressful school mornings for everyone.

 

2. Get Organised

The more organised you are now, the easier the first few weeks back to school will be. Start with going through all the forms and information the school sent home regarding your child’s new teacher, important dates to remember (write these in your calendar), emergency forms to sign and transportation routes. We also recommend designating a spot in your house for all homework, permission slips and any other school-related paperwork.

 

3. Get supplies sooner rather than later

Normally children will need a few new supplies for the new school year. This can include uniform, stationery, a backpack and a lunchbox. Start by seeing what you already have in the house and what can be reused to save money and avoid having duplicates. Once you’ve established what your child needs, start the supply shopping sooner rather than later to avoid unnecessary stress. Remember, when ordering branded uniform there can often be a wait time, so this may need to be prioritised to ensure everything is ready for September.

 

4. Have a practice run

One of the biggest stressors for kids at the start of school is knowing their route to school, especially if the way they’re getting there has changed or they’ve started a new school or college. Doing a practice run a few days before term starts will put everyone’s mind at ease, and parents can know rough timings for when everyone needs to leave the house to be on time. It’s also a great idea to make a plan for where your child will go after school to help eliminate any confusion during the first few weeks. Whether this is giving them a key to let themselves in at home, going to a neighbour’s house or an after-school club, it’s important to have a clear plan in place.

 

5. Limit screen time

For many children, summertime is filled with much more screen time than they’re usually used to. Ease your child back into the learning process by limiting time spent watching TV, playing video games and browsing social media. Instead encourage them to read or complete homework tasks ready for the new school year. This not only gets them back into the ‘learning mode’ but once they go back to school and are in the classroom for the day, it won’t be such a shock to the system!
